Vetropack builds a new state-of-the-art plant in Italy

The Vetropack Group, one of Europe's leading glass container manufacturers, has announced an investment of over CHF 400 million in a new plant for the important Italian market. Production is expected to start in Boffalora sopra Ticino near Milan in the second quarter of 2023.

The Italian subsidiary of Vetropack Italia S.r.l. has been part of the Vetropack Group since 2015. However, its history of glass production dates back to 1960. Since the Trezzano sul Naviglio plant does not meet Vetropack's ambitious quality and sustainability goals in the long term, the group decided to build a new production facility. “The Italian market is of great importance to us and, thanks to the numerous global brands, plays a central role in our strategy,” explains Johann Reiter, CEO of Vetropack Holding Ltd.

The new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is being built on the site of the former Renaud di Medici paper mill and covers an area of 347,000 m2, of which 170,000 m2 will be used for production facilities. As in the old plant, two furnaces will be started first. However, compared to the previous site, the manufacturer expects an increase in production capacity of about 70%. The infrastructure is focused on capacity expansion as Vetropack expects positive market developments in Italy and beyond in the medium term. All employees of the previous production site were offered a transfer. With a significant increase in output per worker, the labor force will continue to grow. Since 2020, new and existing employees are already being trained to work on new production equipment.
