Rostec develops chip resistors based on glass instead of precious metals

The holding company "Roselectronics" (part of the state corporation "Rostec") has developed a technology for the production of materials for chip resistors without precious metals, according to a statement from Rostec. The new products are distinguished from traditional components based on gold, platinum and others by their low cost, but at the same time they retain all the performance characteristics.

"The technology developed by the Novosibirsk plant of radio components "Oksid", which is part of "Roselectronics", involves the use of materials based on aluminum-borate glasses. This material is used to create electrical insulating coatings for electronic circuits on a metal substrate. The technology will make it possible to abandon silver, palladium, gold and platinum in the production of thick-film chip resistors. At the same time, the performance characteristics are maintained at the level of traditional analogues," the statement says.

A resistor is a widely used component of almost all electronic devices. Traditionally, precious metals are used in the production of such components.

"The new production technology without the use of precious metals will make it possible to create components for use in a wide range of electronic equipment, including special-purpose ones. The first samples of the compositions have been manufactured to date. We are currently working on assessing the reliability characteristics and stability of the obtained parameters of the prototypes of finished products," said Lev Nosenko, CEO of NZR Oksid, whose words are quoted in the report.
