Anton Mor: Environmental factors are the drivers of the glass container market

According to forecasts by analysts at Uniservice Capital, the average annual growth rate of the Russian glass container market in the next three to five years will be 3-4 percent, while from 2017 to 2023 the figure was at the level of 2.4 percent. Anton Mor, Chairman of the Committee for the Development of Production and Consumption of Glass Containers of the Association StekloSouz, General Director of Siberian Glass LLC (one of the leading manufacturers of glass containers in Russia, the largest recycler of glass waste in the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts, an asset of RATM Holding), explained what this dynamic is due to.

According to preliminary estimates by experts, 12.3 billion units of glass containers were produced in the Russian Federation in 2024. One of the trends is a noticeable increase in demand: in 2024, by 1 billion. Russian factories satisfied it with the help of previously formed stocks, having shipped 14.6 billion glass products, that is, more than they produced. According to Anton Mor, the demand for container glass is due to several reasons. Thus, the bottling of bottled water increased by 9%, reaching 13.4 billion liters, soft drinks - by 14.1%, which is explained by the expansion of the range.

- Products for children, premium and organic brands suggest environmentally friendly packaging - glass is inert, does not change the taste and other characteristics of the contents, - continues Anton Mor. - Beer production has grown by more than 10%, in addition, some brewing companies are switching to using a 0.45 liter bottle instead of 0.5. Therefore, this segment also needs additional volumes of glass containers.

In 2024, Russia produced 61 million decaliters of wine and cognac, up 13.4% from 2023.

– Regulatory support for winemakers will continue to stimulate the industry; new areas are being planted for vineyards in the country, – comments Anton Mor. – The culture of consuming alcoholic beverages is developing, including wine, which is traditionally bottled in glass bottles, again, due to the chemical resistance of glass.

Environmental factors are the drivers of the glass packaging market.

– Beverage manufacturers rely on ESG principles in their activities and follow the “green” agenda. A glass bottle can be recycled countless times and can be returned to the production cycle. The higher the share of recycled materials in glass melting, the lower its temperature, as a result, energy consumption is reduced, the amount of industrial emissions is reduced, and the service life of glass furnaces is extended.
