Moscow will legalize the separate collection of garbage on its territory

In the autumn of 2018, the HRO developed recommendations for improving the air quality in the east of the Moscow region in connection with complaints from residents to the council, in particular, they spoke about separate collection of garbage. The “draft of the Moscow government’s draft resolution on the approval of the procedure for the accumulation of municipal solid waste (including separate accumulation) in the territory of the city of Moscow” is currently being developed. The Moscow region officially switched to separate waste collection (RSO) on a two-stream system from January 1, 2019. Residents should separate household waste into recyclable and non-recyclable waste and dispose of it, respectively, in blue and gray tanks. Such containers of two colors from January 1 should be on all container sites of large settlements, in which live from 100 thousand people.

Garbage from the blue and gray containers should take out the blue and gray garbage trucks, respectively. Both streams are sent to the sorting lines, but on different, and mixing them is prohibited. The ability to extract secondary materials from a blue container is many times higher than from gray.

The request for separate waste collection is very high in the Moscow region. According to the latest calculations of the regional government, the new environmental standard for waste management and separate waste collection will reduce the proportion of waste stored at landfills of the Moscow Region from 91% in 2018 to 18% by 2030.
