New York World's Fair in 1939

The World Exhibition in New York was opened on April 30, 1939 and lasted until October 27, 1940. The exhibition area was located in the Flushing-Meadows-Korona park and occupied an area of 4.9 km², which is not yet a broken record. The exhibition was visited by about 44 million people. The exhibition was divided into zones according to the topics (transport, communication, food, management, etc.).

The World Exhibition in New York was not without the Soviet Union’s attempt to surprise the whole world. A huge statue was brought to the exhibition, the height of which reached 80 meters. However, it was by no means the crown of the composition. The fountain was supposed to hit the whole world.

Crystal Fountain

It would seem how you can surprise people with a fountain. A distinctive feature of the design was the material of manufacture. The bowl with a diameter of 2.5 meters and a weight of 6 tons was made of pure crystal. Surprisingly, the bowl was a single piece, which was made by Soviet glassblowers.

It took about 3 months to create the fountain. The design was decorated with bronze and crystal tubes. Western experts were in a state of shock.

They could not believe that such a work of art could be created in such a short time. Translated to modern prices, the cost of the product would be 250 million rubles.
