Microplastic particles found in all human tissues

Researchers from the United States have found nanoplastic particles in fragments of the lungs, kidneys, liver and spleen, which they borrowed from storage of human tissue.

Scientists have studied micro- and nanoplastics in human organs and tissues. Previous research has shown that plastic can pass through the human gastrointestinal tract. To determine if plastic fragments could accumulate in human organs, the researchers had to examine samples obtained from a large repository of brain and body tissue that was created to study neurodegenerative diseases.

Samples of the lungs, kidneys, liver and spleen were found to contain traces of plastic contamination. Scientists associate micro- and nanoplastic effects on the human body with cancer, infertility and inflammation.

Earlier, LIVE24 reported that scientists from the University of Exeter have identified a large amount of plastic microparticles in the intestines of 4 shark species.

According to the researchers, they were able to detect not only microplastics, including even items such as face masks as a possible source of fiber, but also particles similar to regenerated cellulose found in clothing.

The results of the study confirm the fact that the ocean is polluted with plastic. A total of 379 particles were detected in 67% of the 46 sharks studied.

Microplastics are released into freshwater and seawater from decaying debris, tires, synthetic fabrics and personal care products. However, scientists from the German Alfred Wegener Institute decided to test whether all fish accumulate microplastics in the body.

As a result, it was concluded that sea bass fish (Dicentrarchus labrax) for every 5 grams of fillet accumulates only one or two particles of plastic. Moreover, some of the particles were not in the muscles, but in the bloodstream.
