An unknown liquid phase has been found in the glass, which may be a new material

American physicists, who are engaged in the creation of ultra-thin glass with high density, have discovered a liquid phase unknown to science in experimental material. Scientists are confident that this is a new type of material that can be used in various fields of science and industry.

"Who would have thought that new liquid phases could be found in ultra-thin films that are being created to push the boundaries of glass? But it has happened nonetheless. This is one of those discoveries that seem to just appear out of nowhere." Says researcher Zahra Fakhrai of the University of Pennsylvania.

Glass only seems to be a solid material - physicists know that its internal structure is not very different from a liquid. If super-thin glass is made, then an analysis of its internal structure will show that it has even more similarities with a liquid substance. This factor hinders the creation of durable materials based on ultra-thin glasses, and it is precisely such materials that the industry needs today.

"Experiments aimed at understanding how vapor deposition reduces the liquid properties of thin glass have helped to discover a new liquid phase. The discovery could be of tremendous importance for new materials with incredible properties," the scientists say.
