Weaving machines for the production of drone parts based on fiberglass and carbon fiber have been developed in Russia

Specialists of the Russian company "Carbontex" have created looms with 3D technology, which can be used to create heavy-duty materials with different weaving of carbon threads in three directions at once with the ability to connect parts at different angles. Such composite fabrics can be used in the design of light drones, the press service of the National Technology Initiative (NTI) Platform reported.

Technologies for manufacturing products from 3D fabrics with preprogrammed properties - solid-woven volume-reinforcing preforms - are promising for aviation, as they allow at the design stage to set material thickenings in the right places or adjust its flexibility and strength.

“The special strength and lightness of the materials obtained will allow them to be used to create drones with improved aerodynamic and strength characteristics. <…> 3D weaving technology will significantly reduce the cost of production, including polymer composite materials due to a high degree of automation. The use of reinforcing fibers will also help eliminate the main drawback of composites that occurs in traditional production - their delamination during operation," the press service said.

At the heart of the threads, the authors of the project use fiberglass and carbon fiber, which are characterized by high strength and lightness. After impregnation, such composite fabrics can replace the elements of drones, including wings and tails, the developers say.

"The machine allows you to weave in width, length and height, connecting two planes not only perpendicularly, but also at any angle. This arrangement of fibers creates a very dense, voluminous, monolithic and durable woven material. <…> increase their productivity. Drones will become lighter, stronger, more manageable, the carrying load will increase," the press service of the NTI Platform quotes Vyacheslav Rogozhnikov, project manager, CEO of Carbontex.

The project has been announced for participation in the forum "Strong Ideas for the New Times", which will be held in Russia in June and serves as a platform for consolidating and discussing promising projects aimed at achieving national goals until 2030.
