The exhibition «Eulogia in Bottles: A Forgotten Trade» opened at the Packaging Museum

At the very beginning of February, at the Museum of Brands, History and Packaging Design (Sergiev Posad, Pionerskaya St., 16), a tablet exhibition “Eulogia in Bottles: A Forgotten Trade” began working. Until now, few people in modern Russia knew what “eulogy” was, and even in bottles!

With this exhibition, the magazine “Container and Packaging” and the Museum open to visitors a little-known page of our history. This Orthodox craft originated in ancient times, when the monks of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra created miniature icons and church scenes that were placed in glass bottles! It was a unique souvenir for pilgrims visiting the Lavra. Subsequently, this craft spread to other holy places of the Russian Empire. Unfortunately, after 1917 he was undeservedly forgotten...

A large collection of eulogy in vessels is presented in the showcases of the Historical, Art and Memorial Museum. M.V. Frunze in Shuya, Ivanovo region. Such Orthodox souvenirs can be seen in some other museums in Russia. The chief curator of the Shuisky Museum, Elena Pelevina, presented to the editors of the magazine photographs of eulogy, which formed the basis for this unique tablet exhibition (pictured on the right).

The exhibition is supplemented with illustrations from the book by V. V. Vozilov and A. T. Kalinin “EULOGIES IN VESSELS. In Search of a Lost Craft” (Referent Publishing House, 2020).

During the preparation, the organizers, together with the Department of Graphic Design of the Academy of Urban Environment Management, Urban Development and Printing (St. Petersburg, teachers A. Derevyannykh, M. Kuznetsova and E. Levin) held a competition for the best poster for this exhibition.

The exhibition is of undoubted interest for those who are interested in the history of our country and, in particular, the history of religion. It is also of interest to designers, university and college students, as well as a wide range of visitors.
