Henan University has created special glasses that can be changed: they can become transparent or opaque, change their color, and even receive energy from sunlight. They combined two technologies: electrochromic windows that change their transparency and color, and thin-film solar cells that receive energy from solar radiation, according to Pv Magazine.
The first technology uses a special material - nickel-cobalt bimetallic oxide (NiCoO2), which allows you to adjust the transparency and color of the glass. The second technology is kesterite photovoltaic material (CZTSSe), which converts solar energy into electricity.
These glasses are equipped with a special titanium oxide (TiO2) film that stores energy from the sun. It is also responsible for changing the transparency and color of the glass. Solar cells consist of a glass substrate with molybdenum (Mo), photovoltaic kesterite and silver contacts (Ag).
Kesterite is used in glasses due to its availability and good properties. Now scientists have to improve the efficiency (energy conversion factor) of this invention by 2.15% and begin mass production of these glasses.
