Australian researchers from Curtin University have developed an environmentally friendly method for creating glass with unique properties. The new technology makes it possible to produce glass that repels water and has antimicrobial properties using a salt solution and ultrasound.
Traditional methods of modifying glass often involve the use of toxic chemicals, and their effectiveness decreases over time. The approach proposed by scientists uses a solution of diazonium salts and ultrasound at a frequency of 24 kHz, which leads to the formation of microbubbles and microexplosions that change the surface of the glass at the molecular level. The result is a durable coating that is resistant to wear and is environmentally friendly.
The technology opens up new possibilities in various fields, including the creation of self-cleaning surfaces and improved water filtration systems. The water-repellent properties of glass prevent the growth of bacteria such as E. coli, making it a promising material for medical and industrial applications.
