Superconducting magnet. Russian scientists were the first in the world to create a unique device

Scientists at the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP) SB RAS have created a prototype magnet with superconducting properties. It generates radiation that allows you to investigate substances with a complex magnetic structure. The device is planned to be used at scientific stations of the Center for Shared Use "Siberian Ring Photon Source" (TsKP "SKIF").

An undulator is a device in which magnetic fields are generated. Superconducting coils are placed criss-cross at a 90 degree angle, so the upward magnetic field from the bottom row of coils collides with the opposite magnetic field from the top one. Having met, none of these fields can no longer become isolated on itself, so it begins to look for an alternative direction.

An elliptical undulator is so called because the general magnetic field has the shape of an extended circle, an ellipse.

Although experiments with spiral undulators with a rotating magnetic field have been carried out since the 70s. XX century, the setup scheme proposed at the Institute was implemented for the first time in the world.

This method makes it possible to study substances with a complex magnetic structure, for example, rare earth metals. They are used in various branches of technology: in radio electronics, instrumentation, nuclear technology, mechanical engineering, as well as in the glass industry (rare earth elements are part of special-purpose glasses that transmit infrared rays and absorb ultraviolet rays). Rare earth elements and their compounds are of great importance in the chemical industry, for example, in the production of pigments, varnishes and paints, in the oil industry as catalysts.

Molecular magnets will become another object of study. These compounds are used in molecular electronics - they are used to develop devices with ultra-magnetic memory.

So far, scientists have created a prototype, but later the installation will be used by SKIF users.

The Center for Collective Use SKIF will be located near the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology "Vector" in the Koltsovo Science City near Novosibirsk. It is assumed that the synchrotron and one station will be launched before December 30, 2023. The implementation of the project will provide the Siberian region with a high-performance modern infrastructure for solving urgent problems of materials science, biology and medicine, create conditions for research and development, and ensure the entry of Russian scientific, educational organizations and manufacturing companies into the global knowledge and technology markets.

The formation of a competitive infrastructure and environment that meets modern standards of scientific research, the creation of new jobs, including for young personnel, is a priority of the Science National Project.
