An international team of researchers has announced the creation of glass that can heal after cracking. It is based on a polymer material, and the process takes place at room temperature.
Self-healing materials are not new, but their use in commercial products is extremely difficult. Returning to the previous state requires high temperatures or the presence of other components, but not in the case of a new development by scientists from Canada and South Korea. Experts note that the material is able to "heal" cracks without human intervention, and in the future the technology can be used to produce protective glass for smartphones.
At the same time, the researchers write that the main problem is finding a balance between mechanical and self-healing properties. As a result, the choice fell on a polymer that can "heal" wounds without the participation of external forces. Scientists believe that the development will save money for smartphone buyers, as well as reduce environmental emissions.
“Our goal is to maintain the strength of the protective glass and touchscreen that keeps the screen healthy, while adding the dynamic ability to self-repair cracks and scratches. Therefore, we strive to achieve complete "healing" of such injuries only at room temperature. This is what distinguishes our research from others, ”the scientists say.
