Hyundai and Zeiss aim to replace all screens in a car with one.
Mass production to start in 2027.
According to statements from South Korean auto parts supplier Hyundai Mobis and German optics giant Zeiss, the companies have reached a strategic partnership to create holographic displays for car windshields. The new product is being developed at Hyundai Mobis’ technology research center in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do.
The companies said the holographic head-up display would be a major change in the user experience and design of the car. The device would be able to clearly display driving and entertainment information in a wide area from the driver’s seat to the passenger seat, replacing multiple screens on the dashboard in one fell swoop.
The driver can simultaneously monitor the road surface and the display content without changing the viewing angle, which improves driving safety. There would be no need for an LCD instrument panel; all data and cues could be integrated onto the windshield. For passengers, entertainment content could be projected directly into their field of vision.
According to a press release from Hyundai Mobis, both companies completed production of a prototype holographic head-up display in September and demonstrated it to automaker customers. As for the specific timeline for mass production, Hyundai Mobis said it would be in 2027, while Zeiss said it plans to implement it within 5 years.
