Sibsteklo and the government of the Irkutsk region signed a memorandum of cooperation

As part of the XXVII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, General Director of Siberian Glass LLC (Sibsteklo, an asset of RATM Holding, one of the leading manufacturers of glass packaging in Russia, the largest recycler of glass waste beyond the Urals) Anton Mor and the Governor of the Irkutsk Region Igor Kobzev signed a memorandum on cooperation, providing for the development of infrastructure for processing MSW and their involvement in economic circulation.

– The country is currently reforming the system of extended responsibility for manufacturers of goods and packaging. Over the next few years, manufacturers and importers will be required to ensure that products are disposed of after use. Responsible companies have already begun preparations for this, and the Government of the Irkutsk region is ready to assist them, said Igor Kobzev.

In accordance with the agreements, the parties intend to introduce separate waste collection in the region, create conditions for their use in production, reducing the costs of non-renewable resources, including through innovation. Also in the Irkutsk region they plan to stimulate the implementation of specialized projects by creating effective mechanisms for this.

“The memorandum will allow synchronizing the actions of environmentally responsible business and executive authorities in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, the dialogue at the regional level is developing constructively,” comments Eduard Taran, president of RATM Holding. – Sibsteklo is interested in systemic changes aimed at the sustainable functioning of the waste management industry, which is one of the foundations of environmental sustainability. By solving applied problems related to providing the enterprise with secondary raw materials, the company optimizes production processes while simultaneously reducing resource consumption, as well as carbon dioxide emissions in supply chains.

According to Anton Mora, in Russia the share of glass in the total volume of sorted MSW is still insignificant. However, today at Sibstekl they use 55-60% of glass waste as part of the raw material mixture for the production of brown containers and up to 35% for colorless ones:

– In 2023, the enterprise sent 48 thousand tons of cullet to glass melting furnaces, which is equivalent in volume to 740 railway cars. Thanks to the availability of recycling capacities, we are ready to increase the annual figure to 200 thousand tons, contributing to the achievement of the goals of the Ecology national project,” summarized the general director of Sibstekl.
