Siberian sand began to be used to make glass

By 2024, the Siberian Glass plant replaced sand from the European part of Russia with Siberian sand. In total, according to the results of last year, the enterprise used 120 thousand tons of sand. The Russian Ecological Operator emphasized that the company is focused on sustainable development goals.

“In its activities, Sibsteklo follows the principles of a circular economy, the essence of which is the use of recycled materials, rational consumption of resources and reducing the burden on the environment. The company uses Siberian sand in the production of glass containers, the waste of which is returned to circulation. It is a well-known fact that glass can be recycled endlessly, and as a result, this material can be considered one of the most environmentally friendly. According to Sibstekla, by the end of 2024 the share of recycled resources in the production of glass containers at the plant will reach 80%. To achieve this, the company strives to establish efficient collection of glass waste in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation beyond the Urals. This will be possible, among other things, through interaction with executive authorities and participation in the creation of a new municipal solid waste (MSW) management system,” said Denis Butsaev, General Director of REO.

Siberian Glass LLC recalled that sand is one of the main components in the glass batch - up to 70% of the composition. Sibsteklo began replacing quartz sand with low iron content, purchased in the European part of Russia, with Siberian sand in 2022. Using magnetic separators, it is enriched to the required characteristics. Nowadays, glass complexes use 90% of sand from the Tomsk and Novosibirsk regions, reducing the time of its transportation to one day, and the route by 2.3 thousand kilometers.

Sibsteklo also replaced feldspar from the Sverdlovsk region with local raw materials, and dolomite is now brought from the Kemerovo region, whereas previously it was purchased in North Ossetia.

According to RATM Holding President Eduard Taran, cooperation with mining companies from the regions of the Siberian Federal District will allow Sibstekl to reduce its transport footprint in mineral resource supply chains by 51%. The plant will increase operational efficiency, which, in turn, will have a restraining effect on the growth of production costs, caused by increased prices for rail transportation, raw materials, imported spare parts for equipment, the logistics of which have become longer.

“Creating new approaches to procurement management provides both cost savings and strategic benefits in the context of sustainable development. “Sibstekl’s” tasks are large-scale and correspond to the key priorities of the national project “Ecology,” noted Eduard Taran.
