Rostec has improved the production of optical fiber

Experts from the Shvabe holding of the Rostec State Corporation have modernized equipment for the production of optical fiber. This made it possible to create samples with improved characteristics that ensure high quality signal transmission. The improved products can be used in quantum communication systems in various industries.

The research was carried out by specialists from the State Optical Institute named after. S.I. Vavilova (NPO GOI). They improved the production line's drawing tower and its components, and also identified the optimal drawing modes for twisted microstructured optical fibers. As a result, the most favorable conditions were established on the production lines: temperature in the furnace, drawing speed, rotation, pressure and others.

“The optical fibers being developed are a rather complex structure, from the point of view of practical implementation. Modernization of production has already proven its effectiveness - we were able to produce a series of prototypes with high-intensity longitudinal twisting of 790 revolutions per meter. At the same time, the new technology will make it possible to create fiber with extremely induced twist of up to 1000 revolutions per meter, which will significantly improve the quality of signal transmission,” said Kirill Samsonov, interim director general of NPO GOI.

Quartz twisted microstructured optical fibers are of interest for a number of practical applications in various fields of fiber optics and photonics and can be used as fiber optic sensors for recording mechanical effects, the magnetic field of electric current, as mode filters, etc. Optical fibers are distinguished by the quality of signal transmission, have special optical and mechanical characteristics, and therefore can be used in quantum communication systems for generating and transmitting orbital angular momentum.

Experts spoke about the successful modernization of equipment at the All-Russian Dianovsky Conference on Fiber Optics.

NPO GOI is a multidisciplinary institute engaged in the development of scientific and technical potential in optical materials science, as well as the development and production of high-tech technical products - optical clear and colored glasses, mono- and polycrystals, optical fibers and products.
