Russian scientists together with foreign colleagues have created an innovative material for storing and transporting hydrogen

Russian (Osipyan Institute of Physics and Technology) and Brazilian scientists have created a material that can solve serious problems with the storage and transportation of hydrogen in the context of its use as an environmentally friendly fuel. Instead of complex and dangerous methods of storing hydrogen in the form of hydrides or at low temperatures, they used quartz glass enriched with lithium oxide, RT reports.

This material, called lithium silicate glass, is capable of absorbing hydrogen and releasing it at fairly low temperatures, from 10 to 100 degrees Celsius. Lithium oxide gives glass special properties that allow hydrogen to be easily released from the material. It is important to note that the hydrogen in this material does not form chemical bonds with other atoms, making it a safer and more efficient storage method.

Using this developed material, it will be easier and safer to store and transport hydrogen, which can significantly contribute to the development of hydrogen energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions when using it as a fuel.
