American researchers have developed a new type of glass. It was called loudly: LionGlass, that is, Lion-Glass. What is so special about it, “lion-like”, the creators themselves said.

According to the website of the Pennsylvania State University, outwardly the glass differs little from the classic version, but is 10 times more resistant to damage. That is, it is almost devoid of the main weakness of glass, its strength problems. In addition, the new material also does not require a lot of electricity during production, and the process produces less carbon dioxide emissions.

Standard glass is soda-lime-silicate, made from quartz sand, limestone and soda ash. This mix is melted at a temperature of 1500 °C. The process requires a lot of energy, and the output is a lot of carbon dioxide.

In the production of LionGlass, soda ash was replaced in the recipe with aluminum oxide or an iron-based compound. The concentration of silicon dioxide varies from 40 to 90% by weight. The composite is produced at a temperature of 400 °C, and electricity consumption is reduced by 30%.

The study showed that LionGlass can withstand a load of 1 kg, while standard glass cracks at a load of 0.1 kg. This means that it is possible, while maintaining the same strength, to make thinner glasses, saving both material and transportation costs.
