Altai beer companies suffer from container shortages

In 2019, the situation with the shortage of glass containers in the Altai Territory worsened, which is why the available bottles doubled in price. Small entrepreneurs came to ask containers from large ones, and are ready to take even defective ones:

- People come to me and say directly: “Give me a bottle! At least a thousand pieces. ” <...> In five years, gas has doubled in price. What kind of contract improvements can I talk about here? The fact that we left the current prices is already a discount, ”says Maxim Baikalov, General Director of Theisi.

The brewing industry was particularly acute. In this case, difficulties were caused not by increased prices for the bottle, but by its short deliveries:

- I had to negotiate with the networks, redistribute the remaining remnants of the container. Each time, this led to additional costs for the company, ”says Vadim Smagin, CEO of Bochkari.

At the same time, the plant launched a bottling line in aluminum containers, however, of course, it cannot become a full replacement for glass.

The reasons for the shortage of containers, industry experts suggest, are the intentional closure of glass plants by billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who owns a holding for the production of raw materials for aluminum packaging. The second reason is the energy-intensive production of glass and the reorientation to more expensive products, as well as the Ekran glass factory that was intermittent.

All this was reflected and added to the personal problems of the breweries. So, due to high dumping in 2019, federal players were forced to reduce the price in stores for a promotional product to 32-39 rubles. per bottle, which is already below cost:

- In this situation, we cannot afford to increase the price in all packaging options - PET, aluminum can or glass. The main reason is the low purchasing power in our region, ”says Alena Vdovina, PR manager at Barnaul Brewery.
