Petersburg and the Leningrad region, together with the Nevsky environmental operator, launched the preparatory work for the construction of the Ostrovsky KPO

On July 5, in the Vyborgsky district of the Leningrad region, on the territory where the construction of a waste processing complex is planned, the preparatory work for the construction of the Ostrovsky KPO was officially launched. Anastasia Kuznetsova, Chairman of the Leningrad Region Waste Management Committee, Alexander German, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Committee for Environmental Management, and Ekaterina Gorshkova, General Director of the Nevsky Environmental Operator, took part in the official opening.

“The creation of a unified infrastructure for waste management and the transition from obsolete technologies to deep sorting is a complex task for the two regions, which must be solved in close coordination,” said Anastasia Kuznetsova. - Today, the waste that is generated in the city is sent to the region for disposal, and there is no alternative to this, the regions are closely interconnected. That is why it is so important that the further development of the industry takes into account the needs of both the residents of the city and the region, and that is why both the Government of St. Petersburg and the Government of the Leningrad Region have the right to vote today. Today's start of preparatory work for the construction of KPO Ostrovsky is another milestone on our common path to a modern waste processing infrastructure.”

“The existing problems in the field of waste management have been accumulating for years and are of a systemic nature. Their solution requires a consistent radical restructuring of the existing architecture of the industry. Placing up to 90% of MSW in landfills, as is happening now, is the cheapest way to handle waste, but at the same time the most harmful to the environment. The introduction of modern waste processing technologies contributes to the formation of a modern, efficient, and most importantly, environmentally friendly waste management system, which is one of the main goals of the ongoing reform,” Alexander German emphasized.

“For our part, we will ensure that all necessary standards are observed during the construction of the facility and at the enterprise itself, so that everything is environmentally friendly and safe. I also want to note that our facility is a large enterprise, the launch of which will entail the creation of a large number of new jobs for a variety of specialists,” added Ekaterina Gorshkova.

The Ostrovsky waste processing complex is one of the five processing enterprises planned by the Nevsky Environmental Operator for construction on the territory of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. The complex is intended for reception, sorting and processing of municipal solid waste. Together with other designed facilities included in the Territorial Scheme for Waste Management of the Leningrad Region, KPO Ostrovsky should meet the long-term needs of the region in terms of the development of processing capacities. All permits for the start of work have been received.

KPO Ostrovsky will occupy a site located in the Vyborgsky district of the Leningrad region. The design capacity of KPO Ostrovsky for processing is 600 thousand tons per year of solid municipal and bulky waste. The project provides for the placement on the territory of the complex of sorting lines, a closed composting site, an RDF fuel production site, pressing and packaging sites, a specialized site (map) for placing non-recyclable MSW remaining after sorting. This area will also house an R&D area, where research will be carried out on new promising processing methods, including pyrolysis.

Construction of KPO is planned on disturbed lands, the territory was taken out of economic circulation and is an already developed quarry, where sand was extracted for a long time. During the implementation of the project, special attention will be paid to environmental safety issues.

KPO Ostrovsky is a new generation waste management facility. The enterprise will carry out deep sorting of waste, which will allow extracting the maximum amount of useful fractions and giving them a second life. The use of modern protective technologies will help to avoid negative impact on the environment. All this makes KPO Ostrovsky an important part of the modern high-tech waste management infrastructure.

The launch of KPO Ostrovsky is scheduled for the end of 2024.
