Opening of the International Year of Glass in Russia

The second decade of March was marked by the solemn opening ceremony of the International Year of Glass 2022 in Russia, declared by the UN General Assembly. The ceremony was held at the site of the Central Research Institute of Structural Materials "Prometheus" in St. Petersburg.

Viktor Osipov President of the Association "StekloSouz" of Russia - a member of the Russian organizing committee welcomed colleagues and congratulated on the long-awaited important event for the global glass industry.

Viktor Osipov noted that StekloSouz of Russia has been a Member of the Council of the International Commission on Glass (ICG) for more than 10 years.

Viktor Osipov highlighted the results of the 20-year work of the Association, the filling of the information industry portal http://steklosouz.ru/ in two languages (Russian and English), the ongoing distribution of the weekly newsletter, the Program of Activities until 2030, the creation of a temporary working group on glass in the Government of the Russian Federation .

The connection between the activities of the Association "StekloSouz" of Russia and science was especially noted:

- joint educational programs with the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Science of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor Institute of Chemistry and Silicates. I.V. Grebenshchikov of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISKh RAS), which was approved by the lead institute in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education when providing glass grants;

- creation of the Scientific and Technical Center (STC SSR) on the basis of the Research and Production Center "Glass-Gaz" at the Association "StekloSoyuz" of Russia.

Viktor Osipov outlined the issues of preparation for the international Forum "Glass and modern technologies - XXI", the competition "Leader of the glass industry - 2022" dedicated to the International Year of Glass.

Personnel issues were also raised.

During the work of the congress dedicated to the Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Glass in Russia, scientists from leading scientific departments of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as state universities, presented reports in the field of frontier research on the creation of new ceramic and glass materials. The main emphasis was placed on glasses for fiber optics (fiber), electrically conductive ceramics and glass, metallic glasses and the latest mineral-like materials for nuclear energy.

Basic research in this area opens up opportunities for faster and more capacious transmission of energy and information in electronics, and also contributes to more environmentally friendly ways to generate electricity. At the same time, one of the most important tasks of the International Year of Glass in Russia for scientists is to attract larger investments from private companies and the state in the ceramic and glass industry.

Scientific organizations in Russia plan to hold a series of events this year aimed, on the one hand, at popularizing the glass industry and scientific education in this area, and on the other hand, at improving the cooperation of many research, design and production organizations. Scientists are also involved in the development of a new program for the development of the glass industry in Russia until 2030.

Last May, the UN General Assembly declared 2022 the International Year of Glass. As part of the program of the International Year, large-scale celebrations are planned, including the opening ceremony in Geneva, the International Glass Congress in Berlin, the World Congress on Glass Technology in Shanghai and Glass Days in the USA. The closing of the Year of Glass will take place at the International Congress in December this year in Japan.
