Sibsteklo has started recycling glass waste from Sakhalin

Dear colleagues, we are publishing news about the member of the Association "StekloSouz" of Russia, "Siberian Glass" LLC (Sibsteklo):

Sibirskoye Steklo LLC (Sibsteklo, the largest glass waste recycler in the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts, a partner of Russian national projects, and an asset of RATM Holding) received three wagons of cullet from Sakhalin – 150 tons. This is the first batch of used glass sent for recycling to the mainland from the island region.

It is technologically more difficult to produce glass containers without glass waste. In addition, one ton of cullet replaces 1.2 tons of minerals, thereby slowing down the rate of depletion of mineral reserves. Every 10% of recycled materials in the composition of glass-melting components allows to reduce energy consumption by 3%, as a result of which the industrial load on the environment. The service life of glass-melting furnaces is extended from 7-10 to 12-15 years.

According to Anton Mor, CEO of Sibstekl and Chairman of the Committee for the Development of Production and Consumption of Glass Containers of the StekloSoyuz Association, approximately 75 thousand tons of glass containers produced at the plant are delivered to the Far Eastern Federal District per year, both directly to beverage manufacturers whose facilities are located in the Far Eastern Federal District and as packaging for finished products. He named the huge distances for their transportation as one of the restraining factors for involving glass waste in economic circulation, which affects the cost of secondary resources.

Today, Sibstekl uses broken glass from Siberia, Central Russia and the Far East - Amur Region, Khabarovsk and Primorsky Krai. Let us recall that glass waste is collected on behalf of the plant by Chistaya Strana LLC (an asset of RATM Holding), which has entered into an agreement with JSC Waste Management Management, a regional operator for solid municipal waste management in the Sakhalin Region.

As reported by Vladimir Tkachuk, executive director of the regional operator company, within the framework of the separate accumulation of MSW in the adjacent territories, which operates in all districts of Sakhalin, plastic, metal, glass bottles and jars are thrown into special blue containers, then the contents are delivered for industrial sorting. About a ton of glass is selected per day.

According to Alexander Martynov, director of Clean Country, if MSW is sorted at apartment buildings, then the characteristics of broken glass are better than those of landfill. Currently, specialists are discussing optimal schemes for transporting glass waste from Sakhalin, including the possibility of loading it into railcars that return empty from the Far East to Siberia.
