The Ministry of Industry and Trade has prepared the final list of plastic containers subject to ban

Russia has determined a list of types of plastic packaging that should be banned from 2024. The Ministry of Industry and Trade prepared the final list of containers and sent it to the government for approval, Kommersant writes.

We are talking about a draft resolution banning polymer goods and packaging, the waste from which cannot be recycled or is poorly recovered. The document specifies 23 types of packaging, the use of six of which is planned to be limited from 2024, and the remaining 17 from 2030. The newspaper's sources claim that the document can be considered final: it did not cause disagreements with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Economy. At the same time, the list was reduced by five positions compared to the previous version.

From next year, translucent PET bottles of non-standard colors (except blue, green, black and brown), opaque PET bottles (except white for dairy products), as well as PET packaging produced using a PVC label, which interferes with recycling. In addition, restrictions will apply to multi-layer PET bottles, coffee capsules made from multi-component materials and plastic canned containers with a metal lid. Such packaging cannot be completely separated into components and is therefore difficult to recycle.

From 2030, the ban will also apply to Bag-in-Box packaging (a bag with a valve in a box, often used for wine), flexible vacuum packaging doypack, flowpack (a pillow bag with one longitudinal and two transverse seams), multilayer toothpaste tubes , multi-component bags in the shape of a jug, polymer sachet bags up to 80 millimeters, nets for vegetables and fruits, food packaging made of foam polystyrene and other types of containers.

Previously, it was proposed to replace non-ecological plastic with glass, aluminum and paper. Now the Ministry of Industry and Trade is promoting polymer products that can be recycled as an alternative. Opaque PET containers can be replaced with transparent ones, multilayer materials can be replaced with single-layer ones, and multi-component ones with mono-materials.

Earlier it was reported that the business is obstructing the ban on plastic packaging in Russia. Initially, the Russian Environmental Operator (REO) proposed banning 28 types of plastic packaging and replacing them with environmentally friendly analogues - mainly paper and aluminum. But business began to sharply object, and only four positions were agreed upon with the government.
