«INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF GLASS 2022» (UNITED NATIONS)

Dear Colleagues!

As you know, for more than ten years the Association "StekloSouz" of Russia has been a member of the International Commission on Glass (ICG).

At the Congress of ICG Members in 2018, for the first time, a proposal was voiced to declare an "International Year of Glass". The StekloSouz Association of Russia was a member of the organizing committee on this issue. StekloSoyuz made proposals, carried out a lot of work to make this significant event for the world glass industry take place.

The World International Glass Commission, together with the Society of Glass Associations, including the "Glass Union" Association of Russia and the International Committee of Glass Museums, turned to the United Nations with a proposal to declare 2022 the International Year of Glass.

The aim of the project is to highlight the technical, scientific and economic importance of glass - a material that contributes to the creation of new technologies that will build a more just and stable society that can withstand the challenges of globalization.

This proposal was communicated to scientific societies, glass manufacturers and suppliers, universities, research centers and museums.

The StekloSouz Association of Russia carried out a large-scale informing through the industry portal http://steklosouz.ru/ and mailing information letters to the electronic database of the StekloSouz of Russia, which includes 14,711 Russian addressees and 14,531 foreign addressees.

The National Glass Commissions received a letter from the President of the International Glass Commission, Professor Alicia Durand, inviting them to support this initiative.

Supported by 1,500 universities and research centers, communities and associations, museums, artists, educators, manufacturers and companies in 79 countries on 5 continents.

The International Year of Glass 2022 was approved at the session of the UN General Assembly on May 17-18, 2021.

VIKTOR OSIPOV, President of the StekloSouz Association of Russia, was elected to the organizing committee for the preparation for the International Year of Glass 2022.

In connection with the International Year of Glass 2022 (under the auspices of the UN), large-scale celebrations are planned, which include the opening ceremony in Geneva, the International Glass Congress in Berlin (timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the German National Glass Commission, DGG), the World Congress on Glass Technology in Shanghai, Congress on Glass Art and the History of Glass Making. The closing of the Year of Glass will take place at the International Congress in December in Japan. Other international conferences will also be held: Science and technology of glass from the golden era of the Pharaohs to a stable future (Egypt), Structure of non-crystalline materials (UK), Days of glass (USA), international exhibition "VITRUM", "Week of the glass industry" (Italy), International Forum "Glass and modern technologies - XXI" organized by the Association "Glass Union" of Russia (Russia).

World video presentation of the project took place on December 3, 2020
