Krasnoyarsk scientists have come up with ultra-strong glass concrete

Siberian scientists suggest that factories save money and preserve nature using glass concrete. It is created in the laboratory using industrial and household glass waste. It makes up 90% of the mixture. As a result, glass concrete is not only cheaper and stronger than its analogues, but also reduces the amount of non-degradable waste.

It looks like ordinary cement. It can also be mixed with water. But the main component it consists of is glass. When ground it looks like flour. True, inhaling such a substance is dangerous and even fatal. But professionals work with him. Mix with calcium oxide and transfer to molds. Subsequently, the forms are placed in an environment with 100% humidity. The resulting samples remain in it for at least 28 days, after which the material becomes durable. And they examine him - they put pressure on him. Scientists say: it can withstand everything.

Sergey Dobrosmyslov, Candidate of Technical Sciences, researcher at the Federal Research Center KSC SB RAS:“Of course, this is not exactly the size of a classic concrete sample, but in our case, since we use finely ground components, this size is acceptable.”

Glass waste is considered the most difficult to dispose of. They harm the environment. Glass practically does not decompose when exposed to sun, snow or rain. The development of Krasnoyarsk scientists will partially solve this problem. Glass concrete will be useful in the construction, decoration and restoration of buildings where the most durable and durable materials are required. The task was to create something that could be used in factories. Nowadays, when preparing cement there are large emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. Glass concrete is more environmentally friendly and lower in cost.

Sergey Dobrosmyslov, Candidate of Technical Sciences, researcher at the Federal Research Center KSC SB RAS: “The main advantage of glass concrete is that it is actually possible to select a technological process for any composition. Large glass can be used at the same time.”

However, so far enterprises have problems with equipment that will grind glass down to microns. Mills for this are already being produced in Russia. If factories really become interested in more environmentally friendly production, the creation of glass concrete will go beyond the boundaries of laboratories and scientists' experiments.
