Şişecam became a sponsor of the creation of a giant glass ship

Şişecam, a leading global manufacturer of glass and chemicals, has become a sponsor of an art project by Russian artist Alexander Ponomarev - a 15-meter ship created entirely from glass. This glass ship, exhibited at the Tretyakov Gallery, became the largest exhibit in the entire 167-year history of the gallery.

Şişecam, as the largest company in the international glass and chemicals market, has already implemented many projects aimed at preserving the environment for future generations in accordance with its sustainable development strategy CareforNext. In this context, the new project has become one of the most striking examples of cooperation between the industrial industry and artists. Şişecam provided 3 tons of sheet glass and 2.5 tons of broken glass to create a 15-meter sculpture in the form of a glass ship by contemporary Russian artist Alexander Ponomarev, who celebrated the 30th anniversary of his creative activity this year. The ship, which will be exhibited at the Tretyakov Gallery until mid-January 2024, has become the largest exhibit in the entire 167-year history of the museum. The sculpture was created over a period of 15 weeks and as a result became a symbol of the synergistic interaction between the creative potential of the artist and the technical capabilities of the industrial organization. In addition, Şişecam contributed to the artist's work when decorating the floor around the sculpture using glass, symbolizing the sea. In his works, Alexander Ponomarev seeks to draw attention to the problem of climate change, and the new sculpture is no exception. The artist, drawing a parallel between a fragile but unstoppable ship and eternity, was able to breathe life into such a unique work of art.

The artist is known for his work on the theme of sustainable development.

Alexander Ponomarev, known for his works on maritime themes and the theme of sustainable development and transformation, has been a member of the Russian Academy of Arts since 2010. In 2008, the French Ministry of Culture awarded Alexander Ponomarev the Order of Arts and Letters for achievements in the field of literature and art. The artist's focus is often on the underwater world, ships and navigation, but he also addresses other themes such as the natural world, technology and science. Alexander Ponomarev often makes his works multidimensional and interactive, inviting viewers to participate.

Ponomarev's projects were supported by the State Russian Museum, the Louvre Museum (France), the National Museum of Singapore, the Louise McBain Center for Contemporary Art (London), and the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Contemporary Art (Luxembourg). He also acted as the leading artist of the Russian pavilion at the World Exhibition in Lisbon in 1998. At the invitation of the French Ministry of Culture, Ponomarev implemented a project in the Church of Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière in Paris. In 2006, his underwater art-boat surfaced in the fountain of the Tuileries Garden opposite the Louvre Museum, and 15 years later another of his art objects was installed on the Egyptian Giza plateau at the foot of the pyramids.

The State Tretyakov Gallery, with its collection of masterpieces of Russian painting from the Middle Ages to the present day, is one of the world's leading museums, along with the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. The gallery, which presents works by such outstanding artists as Repin, Vasnetsov, Kuindzhi, Surikov, Vrubel, is visited by more than 1.5 million people a year.
