Prices for glass bottles in Germany rose by 140% during the heat wave

Severe temperature increases in Germany have caused a reduction in the production of glass bottles and a shortage of containers at local breweries.

Holger Eichele, CEO of the German Brewers Association (DBB), said that the production of glass containers in Germany has been significantly reduced. Writes the news publication Lenta.

At the same time, skyrocketing energy prices are forcing local companies to reduce glass production. As a result, glass bottle prices in the local market increased by 140 percent in May compared to January 2022.

“Logistics is facing a special test this year,” Eichele told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Other reasons for higher bottle prices are lower production volumes, lower glass imports from Russia and Ukraine, and higher energy supplies.

At the same time, Eichele predicted new challenges for the German brewing business. He said the country's logistics industry will face a particularly difficult test this year. This creates severe problems for local producers and delays the return of glass bottles to circulation.

In fact, Germans spend less money on beer and are less likely to buy alcohol in the supermarket due to lower purchasing power. Earlier, the World Meteorological Organization spoke about the reality of climate change and the "new normal" of extreme summer temperatures.
