The demand for glassware in Europe is increasing

The growth corresponds to the growth trend for the whole of 2017, which was 2% by weight and 2.4% by product and compares favorably with the historical trend from 2012. From 2012 to 2017, production increased by almost 1.7 million tons (an increase of 8.3%) or 6.4 billion units of packaging (an increase of 8.9%). In general, in all segments of the food and beverage market there is an increase in the demand for glass, and the prospects are also very positive for the sector of bottles and bottles for perfumery, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

This positive trend in the glass market reflects a growing consumer interest in environmental issues. Consumers (especially millennials) are increasingly aware of the impact that their daily lifestyle can have on the environment: “plastic pollution” was one of the most popular topics in Google in the UK in 2018.

Environmentally sustainable development is no longer just a “buzzword”; now consumers see a direct link between their buying behavior and major environmental issues, and they want to learn more about the products they buy and how brands behave. According to a Unilever survey conducted in 2017, every fifth (21%) respondent stated that he would actively choose brands if they more clearly indicate their commitment to sustainability on their packaging and in their marketing. A recent pan-European survey conducted with the Friends of the Glass community showed that 78% of Europeans are paying more attention to the environmental impact of their daily lives and activities.

Glass, as never before, is a leading container for liquor, wine and beer, while its share in the food, dairy and water industries is growing. It is the second leading packaging material in Europe in terms of volume. Industry is firmly committed to making glass a champion as a container of the future.
