Shops offered to abandon plastic bags and packaging

As was noted at a meeting of the Human Rights Council, the amount of waste in Russia increases every year. If in 2000 there were about two hundred kilograms of garbage a year per person, today it is already four hundred. According to Rosprirodnadzor, the reason for such dynamics is the turnover of plastic disposable goods — these are food packaging, bottles, and plastic bags that are difficult to remove from recycled materials. As human rights activists noted, now the priority of the garbage program should not be separate collection and recycling, but the prevention of waste generation. For this, shops need to gradually remove the plastic from the sale.

Mikhail Fedotov, Chairman of the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights: “It’s enough to see how much packaging we carry home every day from the grocery store. How many products in our bag, and how much packaging? I am convinced that large stores can become not just a collection point for recyclable materials, although this is very important, and it is absent today, but also a place for the environmental education of citizens. ”

According to a survey by the Levada Center, half of Russians believe that the problem of landfills can be solved by reducing disposable packaging in supermarkets. At the same time, one third is ready to refuse it if an alternative appears in the stores.
