Australian mining corporation Rio Tinto has announced its interest in a project to develop the Jadar lithium boron deposit in western Serbia.
The company has begun preparing a feasibility study for the project, which it plans to complete by the end of 2021, and is currently focusing on obtaining all the necessary permits, writes Metalinfo.ru.
The facility is expected to be operational in 2025-2026, precisely at a time when the demand for lithium is expected to skyrocket due to increased production of electric vehicles around the world.
The production capacity of Jadar is estimated at 55 thousand tons of lithium carbonate per year. As a result, the Serbian enterprise will become the largest supplier of these raw materials in Europe. In addition, Rio Tinto expects to annually receive as by-products about 160 thousand tons of boric acid used in the chemical and glass industries, and 255 thousand tons of sodium sulfate (Glauber's salt), which is used, for example, in washing powders.
