German packaging market shrinks for the first time in many years

According to the Gemeinschaftsausschuss Deutscher Verpackungshersteller - GADV, the German packaging market has shrunk for the first time in many years. In 2019, about 19 million tons of packaging were produced in the country, which in physical terms means a decrease of 1.8% compared to the previous year.

In value terms, production fell by 1.0% to about 33 billion euros. As in previous years, plastic packaging accounted for the largest share in value terms - about 45%; in quantitative terms, packaging made of paper and cardboard was the largest share of the packaging market - about 47%.

In production for various sectors of the packaging market, a mixed picture is obtained: the glass container market grew by 1.2%. On the other hand, the production of metal packaging from aluminum (minus 4.6%) and steel (minus 4.2%), packaging from paper and cardboard (minus 2.5%) and plastic (minus 2.4%) fell.

A similar picture is observed with production in value terms: in 2019, only glass containers showed growth (plus 7%). On the contrary, the cost of packaging made of aluminum (minus 3.3%), plastic (minus 2.1%), steel (minus 0.7%), paper and cardboard (minus 0.4%) decreased.

“Packaging is an important part of the entire retail chain. Without it, a safe and reliable supply of everyday goods would be unthinkable. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, many consumers are again realizing that packaging has an important protective function, as it reliably protects food and beverages from the environment, ”says Johann Overath, CEO of the glass industry union Bundesverband Glasindustrie e.V. and a GADV representative.
