Faceted glass day: 5 facts about the most popular drinking item

September 11 is celebrated annually as the Day of the faceted glass.

A faceted glass is one of the most famous items of Soviet life. In honor of the holiday, we publish material that reveals unexpected facts of the production, use and application of glasses.

Fact No. 1. It is curious that the Soviet faceted glass was developed for industrial dishwashers, which were planned to be introduced into the Soviet public catering system. Ordinary dishes in such machines beat. To make the glass strong, it was fired at a high temperature. By the way, dishwashers were quickly removed from production - they destroyed all the dishes inside themselves except glasses.

Fact No 2. Before glass cups were mass-produced, they were made from wood. To hold the edges together, a special bezel was required. The form element is preserved in the glass. By the way, the upper rim received the popular nickname "Maruska Belt" back in the days of the Russian Empire.

Fact No. 3. The most famous in the USSR were glasses with 16 and 20 sides - it was believed that they play best in the light. They cost around 7-14 kopecks apiece. By the way, the Soviet Union also produced 10, 12, 14, 17 and 18 - faceted glasses.

Fact No. 4. In the 1980s, citizens of the USSR who were buying brand new glasses were shocked by the news: household items burst in their hands after one. The panic was on a universal scale: they discussed enemy conspiracy theories and other nonsense, but the matter turned out to be everyday. One of the factories unsuccessfully changed the glass production technology. Then articles in a humorous magazine were devoted to the miscalculation of manufacturers.

Fact number 5. There are two versions of the origin of the phrase "understand for three." First: in the days of Khrushchev, a bottle of vodka cost three rubles. Therefore, those who were eager to forget were thrown off a ruble and divided the bottle for three. The second version sounds like this: in all the same Khrushchev times, checks for 125 and 200 milliliters disappeared from sale, so that only bottles of 500 milliliters remained, ideally poured into three glasses to the rim.

By the way, September 11 is not only the Day of the faceted glass, but also the Day of sobriety. In all Orthodox churches, services and prayers are held for the souls of people who abuse alcohol.
