CEN and CENELEC Launch New Flexible standards development process

Starting April 1, 2020, CEN and CENELEC began implementing a “flexible standards development process,” as decided by their Technical Council. This process applies to the development of any CEN and / or CENELEC standards. It aims to ensure the timely adoption of European standards. The timely adoption of standards is a key issue, especially when responding to requests from the European Commission in the field of standardization.

Providing greater responsibility and flexibility to technical committees in the development of standards on the one hand and increased control by the Technical Council of the fulfillment by the technical committees of the obligation to complete work on standards in a timely manner regularly monitor its progress on the other hand, will become the main provisions of the new approach.

With the new process, the duration of the two phases of the work of the shopping center (request for the development of a new standard and voting on the text of the standard) becomes flexible (now it is rigidly fixed time period of 34 weeks) at each stage and will be determined by the TC for each work item in accordance with its needs.

This flexibility is believed to help technical committees better plan their work, especially in the face of the current difficulties caused by the health crisis due to COVID-19 distribution in Europe.
