Analysts told about the volume of new solar power plants in 2021

The volume of new photovoltaic solar energy on the global market in 2021 will range from 160 to 209 GW, PV Magazine reported on February 23, citing BloombergNEF.

For comparison, in 2020 and 2019 this figure for solar energy reached 135 and 118 GW, respectively.

“The solar markets in most countries will grow in 2021, especially in India, where a large number of projects have been delayed from 2020, and in China, which is expected to maintain growth in order to meet its 2060 target,” explains BloombergNEF.

The publication suggests two options for the development of solar energy. Conservative means new grid-connected PV systems will be 160 GW this year and 163 and 179 MW in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

According to the second, optimistic scenario, the growth of new PV modules is expected to reach 209 GW this year and 221 and 240 GW in the next two years, respectively.

BloombergNEF analysts believe that disruptions in the supply of glass and polysilicon will not stop the market.

"Along with the anticipated new glass production capacity, there should be ample supply as new glass and polysilicon factories are commissioned, although polysilicon will be a bottleneck and prices are likely to stabilize at around $ 12 / kg this year." - the publication reports.

A few weeks earlier, BloombergNEF chief analyst Jenny Chase predicted that the world could add 151-194 GW of new solar generating capacity this year.

She also predicted that a recovery in the supply of glass needed for solar panels would push average module prices down another $ 0.02 per watt to $ 0.18 per watt this year.
