On September 24, a series of "EcoCenter" environmental lessons for primary school students kicked off at Educational Center No. 10 in the village of Krasnaya Ulka (Maykopsky District). The first session focused on glass and its recycling. Thirty-five students from the second and third grades participated in the lesson.
How does ordinary sand turn into glass? What happens to a used bottle during the recycling process? Why is glass crushed, and can an old jar become a new one? The children explored these questions together, tracing the entire journey of glass from production to reuse.
Along the way, they learned that there are different types of glass and discovered the term "cullet" (broken glass used in manufacturing). They also expanded their vocabulary with another complex term: "upcycling"—a creative form of reuse where an everyday object takes on a new function.
Then, they moved straight from theory to practice. During a workshop, the children gave glass jars a second life: using acrylic markers, they transformed them into colorful pencil holders, organizers, and small vases. Each child created a unique design, ensuring no two jars were alike.
Lessons like these introduce children to recycling principles at an early age. Through simple examples, they demonstrate that used glass, paper, and plastic can become raw materials for new products, and that some items can be given a new life without undergoing the recycling process itself.
Glass was the first topic in the series. Future sessions will focus on waste paper and plastic, exploring what they are made of, how they are recycled, and what they can become after use.
